Urban Forestry

The City of Rome is committed to preserving one of Rome's greatest resources - its lush tree canopy, with the additionBucket Truck in Tree of Urban Forestry in 2007. The Urban Forestry crew is responsible for all aspects of tree care on the City right-of-way including:

  • Certified arborists on staff
  • Assists in preparations for City celebrations each year by placing various flags and banners on Broad Street
  • Maintains holiday lighting on Broad Street
  • Planting and maintenance of trees on City right-of-way
  • Removal of dead or dangerous limbs and trees on the right-of-way
  • Staff on call 24/7 to provide assistance and ensure public safety during and after severe weather events
  • Supports all City departments with the use of bucket trucks and operators

The Urban Forestry division is headed by Arborist Ernie Watson who is a key participant on the City of Rome Tree Board, which consists of a body of interested citizen-volunteers including various garden club members, County Extension Agent, and the director of Keep Rome-Floyd Beautiful. Georgia Forestry Service, Georgia Power, and Floyd County Public Works also send representatives to participate in this active group.

The Urban Forestry staff also provide support for yearly events such as Arbor Day, Earth Day, Young Scholars, andTree City USA Foundation Camp. Through their dedicated service, the Urban Forestry personnel have contributed to the City of Rome's designation as a Tree City USA, which is a National Program sponsored by the Arbor Day Foundation.
